Designated a “Project of National and Regional Significance” by federal transportation legislation, the $3.4 billion Elgin O’Hare Western Access Project will help address the area’s diverse travel needs by improving travel efficiency, providing western access to O’Hare International Airport, creating opportunities for jobs and economic development, enhancing multi-modal connections, and reducing congestion.
EDI is a member of the RS&H team providing Phase II engineering services for the construction of new mainline lanes for the Elgin O’Hare Western Access between I-294 and I-90. This project is approximately located along the Western Access between Devon Avenue and Pratt Boulevard.
EDI’s survey scope includes topographic route survey, Illinois Tollway basemapping, coordination and access with Canadian Pacific and Union Pacific Railroads; establishing site control from supplied corridor control using GPS and digital differential leveling; and setting control points with recovery ties and benchmarks with descriptions for construction document inclusion.
EDI also located monumentation to define the existing and proposed right of way of local roads, and the proposed mainline and the railroads within the project limits. EDI is also charged with surveying the existing railroad tracks 1,000 feet north and south of the proposed structures at approximately Devon Avenue, as well as a portion of the west side of O’Hare Airport.
EDI’s scope also includes tree surveys, a wetland delineation survey, and supporting geotechnical engineering efforts by staking and locating cores and borings. EDI also surveyed existing drainage systems on adjacent properties, and established contours for four proposed detention ponds.
